Students to Participate in Variety of Veteran’s Day Experiences
A selection of secondary campus Veteran’s Day celebrations include Thursday’s North Belton Middle School color guard ceremony and Friday’s Take a Vet to School Day at South Belton Middle School, Belton New Tech High School @ Waskow’s Share Your Service Day and a Vietnam POW talk to Belton High School students.
Veterans and Active Duty Military personnel have been invited to enjoy lunch with NBMS students and observe the Ft. Hood Non-Commissioned Officer Academy (NCOA) present their historical color guard ceremony, “I Am Sergeant.” There will be a performance in each of the campuses’ three lunch periods between 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
South Belton Middle School’s eighth annual “Take a Vet to School Day” school-wide assembly will honor over 100 area veterans before many of those veterans take time to speak to individual classes about their service. The assembly keynote speaker will be SBMS custodian Don Garner, who served for 30 years and retired as a Command Sergeant Major in the First Cavalry Division. Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. with the assembly beginning a short time after.
Community members who have served in any branch of the military, or are currently serving, are invited each year to Belton New Tech High School @ Waskow to share their stories of service with students. Speakers are scheduled throughout the day; for specific times, contact campus administration.
And Colonel Tomas J. Curtis, USAF, retired, who was a POW in the Hanoi Hilton, will speak about his life during a community talk where other veterans will also be in attendance and will include a 30-minute talk, Q&A session, and book signing. Colonel Curtis’s talk begins at 10 a.m. at Grand Avenue Theater
